Surface Dynamics Measurements of Silica Glass
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present helium atom scattering experiments from the vitreous silica surface. Time-of-flight data of scattered He-atoms have been recorded at varying temperature and as a function of parallel momentum transfer. A dominant elastic peak and two broad features at ≈ 4 meV, one each on the phonon annihilation and creation side, are observed in all spectra. The thermal measurements between 127.0 and 368.5 K unveil clear Debye-Waller attenuation behavior of the elastic peak and indicate that scattering occurs in the single-phonon regime below 200 K. The root mean square vibration amplitude at room temperature is estimated to be 0.014 nm with a corresponding surface Debye temperature of 340± 20 K and an effective mass of 18 a.u. The obtained values agree well with bulk values under the assumption of force constants at the surface reduced by one-half. The wavevector dependence of the Debye-Waller exponent indicates a well depth of the atomsurface interaction potential of 10 ± 2 meV. The broad inelastic features on the phonon creation and annihilation sides are identified as the surface manifestation of the boson peak phenomenon in amorphous materials. An unusual shifting of the boson peak modes to higher energies with increasing temperature is observed. Measurements at different parallel momentum transfers unveil a non-dispersive behavior of the boson peak mode. PACS numbers: 61.43.Fs,63.50.+x,78.30.Ly,72.10.Di

Hydrophilicity of Silica Nano-Porous Thin Films: Calcination Temperature Effects
In this research work, silica nano-porous thin films were deposited on glass substrates by layer by layer method. The thin films were calcinated at various calcination temperatures (200, 300, 400, and 500 °C). The morphology, surface characteristics, surface roughness and hydrophilic properties of the thin films were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total ...
متن کاملAnomalous phonon behavior: blueshift of the surface boson peak in silica glass with increasing temperature.
We present helium atom scattering measurements of the boson peak at the surface of vitreous silica between 127.0 and 368.5 K. The most probable energy shows a strong temperature dependence and increases linearly with temperature in the measured range. The observed blueshift of the surface boson peak (shift rate 0.008+/-0.002 meV/K) is a factor of 4 to 10 times stronger than shift rates measured...
متن کاملInvestigation of the Use of Various Silica Source on NaX Zeolite Properties
Silicon and aluminum sources are most important reactants in the synthesis of zeolite. The use of the silicon source has an important effect on the crystallization of zeolites. Also, it can change the properties of the end product. This work reports the influence of three common commercial silica sources such as colloidal silica (Ludox AM-30), fumed silica and water glass on the crystallinity o...
متن کاملExperimental Study of the Combined Use of Fiber and Nano Silica Particles on the Properties of Lightweight Self Compacting Concrete
In fiber concretes, microcracks in the boundary area between the cement paste and the surface of aggregates or fibers are higher. Natural and artificial pozzolans can be used for reinforcing this area. In this research, the combination of glass fiber, zeolite, and nano silica particles were used in lightweight self-compacting concrete containing scoria. Fiber volume fractions between 0% to 1.5%...
متن کاملRelaxation of silica glass surfaces before and after stress modification in a wet and dry atmosphere: molecular dynamics simulations
Previous molecular dynamics simulations have shown that compression of silica glass surfaces occurs upon formation of an interface with a model crystal and that a structural change caused by this process is retained after glass and crystal are separated. The remnant structural modification caused by this stress was an increase in the concentration of siloxane bond angles less than 1508 in the n...

This study is focused on synthesis of nano-colloidal silica via alkaline water glass solution. Sodium ions of water glass were removed by cation exchanging in a resin column to obtain the silicic acid which was titrated to the solution of sodium silicate. Concentration of the colloidal silica and pH value of the solutions were controlled using different concentrations of alkaline sodium silicat...
